Immediate load implants in Bethesda – teeth in an hour

Lost, rotten or broken teeth can not only look bad but also increase a risk of many health problems. When a tooth cannot be saved because of many different reasons like excessive decay, gum disease or cracks the best action we can take to replace that tooth is with a titanium dental implant.

Fortunately, Americans under age of 50 have excellent odds of keeping their teeth due to fluoridation of public water and dental-care improvements. This is not so for U.S. adults over the age of 65. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention one fourth of these citizens are completely toothless.  Furthermore, The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial reports that 58% of Americans age of 50 and over have fewer than 21 teeth (out of 32).

The lost of teeth can create many problems for people. To start with, it can interfere with healthy nutrition limiting intake of vegetables, nuts, and other healthy foods in favor of softer processed fare.  Furthermore, loss of teeth will create more serious problems such as bone loss, loss of adjacent teeth, periodontal disease and many more problems. Surprisingly people also see it as a sign of getting old.  Speaking for not only me, nobody likes to feel old and loss of teeth faces people with that reality. This   doesn’t have to take over your life, if you have strong and healthy teeth that are in the form of an implant.  Once the implants are in, they act as natural teeth and you would use them exactly the way you would use your natural teeth.

Traditional ways of dealing with replacement of missing teeth are dentures and bridges. Still today a lot of people choose these options because of lack of information or fear of having an implant surgery. One common and repetitive fact I heard from every patient that came to see me with dentures is that they are so uncomfortable, annoying, they tend to shift and most of all look unnatural.  The most irritable fact is that dentures withstand only one sixth the chewing forces that healthy teeth tolerate.  But most importantly dentures make people have a lack of self confidence and feel old.

As a dentist my goal is to make dentistry as comfortable and convenient as possible for the patients while keeping the visits to my office at minimum. FDA approved immediate load implants in 2010 and since day one I was willing and able to embrace this concept due to extensive experience that I have with implants and oral surgery. It is absolutely wonderful how people come in with a broken tooth and an hour later they walk out of my office with a new tooth. Everything is done at one visit- the placement of an implant, bone graft, abutment, and the impression for the crown. The patient comes in for an initial consultation which is complementary. At this time we take an x-rays and do tests that show us if the patient satisfies the criteria for an immediate load implant. Two important things we look at is if the patient has enough healthy bone to anchor the implant and if the position and dept of the nerves and sinus in the jaw. If these criteria are satisfied the patient becomes a perfect candidate. Even for the patients that have a certain bone loss the implants are possible by placing a bone grafting material and guided tissue regeneration at the time of the surgery to support the implant in the bone.  The healing period called osseointegration (the time taken for an implant to grow into the bone) is at minimum as the implant is supported by artificial bone material and tissue. In a matter of two weeks the implant will be ready for a permanent crown (in the meanwhile it will be supported by a temporary crown for the aesthetic reasons). The experience with these immediate load implants is great for a patient. Just a couple of days of being careful and not biting directly on the implant are all it takes. The most important thing that I make very clear to my patients is for them to proceed with scrupulous hygiene. In my option trips to the hygienist should be scheduled for every three months (instead of six months for patients with no dental implants). The patients that do not maintain healthy hygiene are more prone to failure than others. Also smokers, alcoholics and diabetics are at more risk than others.

There is no limit to as how many implants can be done at one visit. At my clinic we specialize in full mouth reconstructions with patients doing as many as ten implants at one seating. All it takes is just few hours and the results are absolutely beautiful.  The patients are happy with their new smile, feel confident and ready for a night out of tasting the best food of their choosing.
